For example, those diagnosed very young had about one-third the risk of heart complications and one-quarter the risk of severe eye damage.

Nerve damage in the legs showed an even starker difference—people diagnosed before age 7 had about one-sixth the risk compared to those diagnosed between 13 and 15. Similarly, kidney complication risk was about 40% lower in the earliest-diagnosis group.

One notable exception: lower-limb infections did not follow this pattern. Risk of these infections was similar regardless of diagnosis age, suggesting this type of complication may develop through different mechanisms.

Kidney Complications Remain Common Across All Groups

While earlier diagnosis was protective for several complications, kidney problems stood out as the most frequently occurring complication across the entire study population. About 5 in every 1,000 people per year developed kidney complications—roughly six times more common than heart complications.

This finding highlights that even when diagnosed very young, kidney health requires sustained attention and monitoring throughout life with Type 1 diabetes.

Why Age at Diagnosis Might Matter

The reasons behind these patterns are not entirely clear from this study alone. Earlier diagnosis typically means earlier treatment and a longer time for families to establish good management habits. People diagnosed younger also may have benefited from advances in insulin technology and care approaches that evolved over the decades the study covered. Additionally, how long someone has lived with diabetes appears to influence some complications more than others.

The researchers accounted for multiple factors—including diagnosis year, socioeconomic background, and acute complications—to isolate the effect of age at diagnosis as much as possible.

What This Means Going Forward

These findings reinforce that early detection of Type 1 diabetes offers long-term benefits, though it is not a guarantee against complications. The study underscores the importance of consistent diabetes management and regular screening for complications throughout a person's life, regardless of when they were diagnosed.
