Vert.Ex Pharmaceuticals presented results from a small study of islet cell transplantation at the American Diabetes Association scientific sessions. Islet cells are the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas that stop working in Type 1 diabetes.
In this study, 12 people with Type 1 diabetes received a transplant of these cells delivered through the portal vein. According to the presentation, 10 of the 12 participants continued to produce some of their own insulin after the procedure.
