FDA approved (delays onset)/regulatory/Sanofi (developed by Provention Bio)

Teplizumab (Tzield)

This is the first therapy approved to change the course of type 1 diabetes by delaying it. Important: it delays onset for at-risk individuals; it is not a cure and does not reverse established diabetes.

How it works

An infused antibody that quiets the immune attack on insulin-producing cells. It is FDA-approved to delay the onset of Stage 3 (clinical) type 1 diabetes in eligible at-risk people who are already in Stage 2.

Approach
Anti-CD3 immunotherapy that delays onset
Immunosuppression
Short treatment course, not a transplant drug
