Managing Type 1 diabetes as a teenager requires constant attention—checking blood sugar, taking insulin, and making daily decisions about food and activity. Today, many of these tasks involve digital tools and online information. A new study published in BMC Pediatrics explored whether adolescents' ability to use digital health resources effectively influences how well they manage their diabetes and how they feel about their lives.

The research involved 250 teenagers (average age 14) with Type 1 diabetes who completed questionnaires about their digital health literacy, self-care habits, and quality of life. Digital health literacy means being able to find, understand, evaluate, and use online health information and tools.

The Gap in Digital Health Skills

One striking finding: 81% of the adolescents in the study had low eHealth literacy. This suggests that many teens with Type 1 diabetes lack confidence or skill when it comes to navigating digital health resources. This gap could make it harder to find reliable information about their condition or use apps and online tools that support their care.

The Connection Between Digital Skills, Self-Care, and Well-Being

The study found clear links between these three factors. Adolescents with stronger eHealth literacy were more likely to practice self-care behaviors—the daily actions that keep diabetes in check. And teens who reported better self-care showed notably better quality of life, including better emotional health and less disruption to school and social activities.

Statistical analysis showed that self-care acts as a bridge: when teenagers develop better digital health skills, they tend to use those skills to improve their self-care routines, and that stronger self-care leads to feeling better overall.

What This Means for Teens and Families

While this is observational research and does not prove that improving digital health skills will automatically boost quality of life, it does highlight an important opportunity. Helping adolescents become more confident and skilled in using digital health resources may support better diabetes management and well-being.

Parents, educators, and healthcare providers might consider ways to build adolescents' eHealth literacy—whether through education about reliable online resources, training on diabetes apps, or teaching how to critically evaluate health information found online.
