What This Study Looked At

Researchers in China studied real-world use of a new insulin pump model called the Ari two-in-one pump in 47 adults with type 1 diabetes. The pump is distinctive because it can switch between two forms: a tubeless patch that sticks directly to skin, and a more traditional tubed pump. Each form is available with either standard or short cannulas, giving users options based on their preference and lifestyle.

Over at least three months of use, patients answered surveys about their blood sugar management, quality of life, comfort, and overall experience with the pump. The researchers collected self-reported data and analyzed the results to understand how well the pump worked and how patients felt using it.

Blood Sugar Control Results

Patients using the Ari pump achieved an average HbA1c of 7.2%, which reflects their average blood sugar control over the study period. When researchers looked at continuous glucose monitor data, they found that patients spent 74% of their time with blood sugar in the target range of 3.9 to 10.0 mmol/L (roughly 70–180 mg/dL).

About 18% of the time, blood sugar was above the target range, and 8% of the time it was below target. These percentages met clinical goals for high blood sugar, but the low blood sugar time was higher than recommended targets, meaning hypoglycemia (low blood sugar events) remains a challenge for some users.

When comparing their experience with the pump to their previous treatment, 55% of patients reported fewer low blood sugar episodes, and 53% reported fewer high blood sugar episodes. This suggests the pump helped many people reduce problematic blood sugar swings.

Quality of Life and User Experience

Beyond blood sugar numbers, researchers asked patients how the pump affected their daily lives. Nearly 49% said they felt more confident in their treatment and experienced greater freedom in their daily activities. This kind of confidence and flexibility can be important for people managing a condition that requires constant attention.

The majority of patients—79%—reported better wearing comfort with the pump compared to previous methods, and 77% experienced meaningful overall improvement in their quality of life. These findings suggest that the pump's design and flexibility appealed to many users and made managing diabetes feel more manageable.

This real-world study demonstrates that the Ari two-in-one pump helped a group of Chinese adults achieve reasonably good blood sugar control while also improving their sense of confidence and quality of life.
