When young people switched from human insulin to insulin analogues, they spent an additional 26 minutes per day within their target blood sugar range. While that may sound modest, it reflects measurable improvement in daily glycemic control.
The study also found reductions in low blood sugar episodes. Patients experienced 11 fewer minutes of low blood sugar per day overall, and 10 fewer minutes of nighttime lows specifically. Nighttime hypoglycemia is particularly important because it can occur without the person noticing and may interrupt sleep or cause morning complications.
What the Numbers Tell Us
On average, 24-hour mean blood sugar levels were about 6 mg/dl lower with insulin analogues compared to human insulin. The researchers used statistical methods to account for individual differences and to isolate the effect of the insulin type itself.
However, the study also revealed that despite these improvements, blood sugar variability—how much blood sugar swings up and down—remained high for many patients. This suggests that while insulin analogues offer benefits, other factors influencing day-to-day control remain unresolved.
