The biggest differences appeared in two specific areas: management distress (the burden of day-to-day self-care tasks) and powerlessness (feeling unable to control their diabetes). This makes sense, since AID systems automate insulin dosing decisions that would otherwise require constant attention and mental energy.

Interestingly, differences between groups were smaller when it came to worry about low blood sugar and concerns about social judgment. Both groups benefited similarly in these areas, likely because nearly 94% of the non-AID group also used continuous glucose monitoring (CGM). The real-time glucose data from CGM systems appears to reduce hypoglycemia worry in both groups, suggesting CGM technology has its own important benefits independent of insulin delivery method.

Why the Emotional Burden Matters

During interviews, AID users described feeling relief from the constant mental and emotional work of diabetes management. Rather than calculating insulin doses, monitoring blood sugar trends, and making adjustment decisions throughout the day, AID systems handle these tasks automatically. This reduction in cognitive load appeared to translate into measurable decreases in diabetes distress.

The findings underscore that the benefits of newer diabetes technologies extend beyond just achieving better numbers. For many people, reducing the exhausting mental and emotional demands of diabetes self-management is just as important as improving glycemic control.
