Researchers scored participants' diets based on three healthy eating patterns: the Alternate Healthy Eating Index-2010, the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet, and the Mediterranean-Style Dietary Pattern. These patterns emphasize whole grains, vegetables, fruits, legumes, fish, and healthy fats while limiting processed foods and added sugars.
What the Findings Show
When people with Type 1 diabetes followed healthier eating patterns more closely, their homocysteine levels decreased. For every one-point increase in diet pattern score, homocysteine dropped by 0.56%.
The study found associations between adherence to healthy dietary patterns and lower levels of these inflammation and clotting markers in both people with Type 1 diabetes and those without it. This suggests that eating well may help protect the heart for everyone, but especially those at higher cardiovascular risk.
