What Is Zimislecel?

Zimislecel is an experimental cell therapy developed by Vertex Pharmaceuticals for Type 1 diabetes. It uses stem cells that have been grown and differentiated into insulin-producing islet cells—the cells the body normally uses to regulate blood sugar.

The therapy is delivered as a single infusion directly into the liver through the portal vein, where the new cells are designed to engraft and take root. The treatment requires immunosuppressive medication to prevent the body from rejecting the transplanted cells.

Results from the FORWARD-101 phase 1/2 trial were presented at the American Diabetes Association Scientific Sessions and published in The New England Journal of Medicine. The trial followed patients for one year after receiving a single infusion of zimislecel.

According to the results, the therapy restored the body's physiologic ability to regulate glucose levels and restore glucose-responsive insulin production. At one year, some patients achieved insulin independence, meaning they no longer required insulin injections or infusions.

The trial enrolled patients with Type 1 diabetes who experience recurrent severe hypoglycemic events—dangerous episodes of very low blood sugar.
