Understanding the Challenge
Type 1 diabetes occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. To cure the condition, researchers must solve two interconnected problems: restore the pancreas's ability to produce insulin and prevent the immune system from attacking those cells again.
Unlike some conditions, type 1 diabetes doesn't affect everyone in the same way. Genetics, environmental factors, and individual immune differences shape how the disease develops and progresses. This means there is unlikely to be a single cure that works equally well for everyone.
Where We Stand Today
Islet cell transplantation is one treatment available now for some people with severe low blood sugar episodes and loss of warning symptoms. The procedure involves transplanting insulin-producing cells from a donor pancreas.
For some patients, transplantation has reduced or temporarily eliminated the need for insulin therapy. However, it is not a cure. The transplanted donor cells cannot survive long-term because the immune system continues to attack them, much as it attacks a person's own beta cells.
