The Immune System Attack

Type 1 diabetes develops when the body's own immune system attacks and destroys the beta cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. These specialized immune cells, called autoreactive T lymphocytes, mistakenly identify beta cells as a threat and destroy them. As more beta cells are destroyed, the pancreas produces less and less insulin, eventually leading to insulin deficiency and the need for lifelong insulin therapy.

This process—where the immune system attacks the body's own cells—is called autoimmunity. Type 1 diabetes is considered an autoimmune disease because the damage is caused by the body's own immune system rather than by infection or injury.

Genetics and Risk

Not everyone develops Type 1 diabetes, even when exposed to similar environmental factors. Genetics plays a major role in determining who is at risk.
