What Is Kawasaki Disease?
Kawasaki disease is an acute inflammatory condition that primarily affects children. It causes swelling of blood vessels throughout the body and can disrupt the immune system in ways that last well beyond the initial illness. Until now, researchers did not have a clear picture of whether children who had Kawasaki disease face higher risks of autoimmune and cancer-related diseases years or decades later.
The Study: Following Children Over 20 Years
Researchers in Israel used health records from 2002 to 2022 to compare 2,126 children who had Kawasaki disease with 10,630 matched children who did not. They tracked both groups for up to 20 years, watching for the development of autoimmune conditions (such as psoriasis, vitiligo, and hypothyroidism) and cancers (Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma). Type 1 diabetes, celiac disease, and inflammatory bowel disease were also monitored.
What the Results Showed
Children with Kawasaki disease had a significantly higher risk of psoriasis (a skin autoimmune condition) in the years immediately following the illness, with the elevated risk persisting for about 15 years. Vitiligo, another autoimmune skin condition, showed a statistically significant increase starting around 10 years after Kawasaki disease.
The study also detected a nominally significant elevation in Hodgkin lymphoma risk beginning 15 years after Kawasaki disease, though this finding was based on a smaller number of cases.
Type 1 diabetes was examined as one of several outcomes but did not show a statistically significant increase in risk among children with Kawasaki disease compared to controls during the 20-year follow-up period.
What This Means for Patients and Families
This research adds to growing evidence that Kawasaki disease can have lasting effects on the immune system. The findings suggest that children who have had Kawasaki disease may benefit from ongoing medical attention to catch autoimmune and other health conditions early if they develop.
It is important to note that while risks were elevated for certain conditions, many children who had Kawasaki disease do not go on to develop these autoimmune diseases or cancers.
