A new study published in the Mediterranean Journal of Rheumatology examined medical records from over 30,000 people with Down syndrome to answer this question.
Researchers used electronic health records from the TriNetX research platform, which includes data on over 100 million patients across the United States. They compared gout rates in people with trisomy 21 to a matched group of people without Down syndrome to see if there was a real difference.
The Findings
People with Down syndrome had gout significantly more often than those without it. Among people with trisomy 21, about 2.90% had gout. In the comparison group without Down syndrome, only about 1.05% had gout. This means the relative risk of gout for people with Down syndrome was 2.76 times higher—or roughly three times as common.
The increased gout risk held true regardless of age, sex, or race. Whether looking at different age groups, men versus women, or different racial backgrounds, people with Down syndrome consistently showed higher rates of gout.
