Can Propolis Delay Type 1 Diabetes? What a New Mouse Study Shows

What Is Propolis?
Propolis is a sticky, resinous substance made by honey bees from plant materials. It has been used in traditional medicine around the world for centuries, particularly for its anti-inflammatory properties. Scientists have documented that propolis can affect how the immune system works, which raises the question: could it influence type 1 diabetes development?
The Study: Design and What Researchers Found
Researchers gave female NOD mice—a strain that naturally develops autoimmune diabetes—either standard food or food mixed with propolis for 26 weeks. They tracked when diabetes appeared and examined immune system changes at 14 weeks.
At 17 weeks, mice eating propolis developed diabetes more slowly than mice eating regular food. However, by 30 weeks (the end of the study), the total number of mice that had developed diabetes was similar across all groups. In other words, propolis delayed onset but did not prevent diabetes overall.
How Propolis May Have Worked
When researchers examined the mice's immune systems, they found that high-dose propolis reduced the number of immune cells infiltrating the pancreas—the organ attacked in type 1 diabetes. Propolis also changed the types and amounts of immune cells in ways that may have temporarily slowed autoimmune attack.
The mice eating propolis also showed shifts in their gut bacteria, including an increase in a bacterial species called Akkermansia muciniphila. Because gut bacteria influence immune system behavior, these changes may have contributed to the protective effect observed.
What This Means—and What It Doesn't
This research is an important early step in understanding whether compounds from nature might influence type 1 diabetes. It shows that propolis can affect immune responses in mice, which justifies further investigation.
However, this was a laboratory study in one mouse strain. Results in mice do not automatically translate to humans, and much more research would be needed before we could know whether propolis might help delay or influence type 1 diabetes in people. This study is not a basis for treatment decisions.
